Days later, Trump brought Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the White House, joined by leaders from France, Germany, the UK, Italy, and Finland, along with NATO and EU chiefs, for further discussions on a possible settlement.
Crowley described the meeting with Putin in Anchorage, followed by talks with Zelensky and Western leaders in Washington, as “very productive” and “game changers” for the peace process. She added that all parties now appear genuinely interested in ending the conflict but warned, “This is not going to happen overnight. Peace is a process.”
Trump had previously pledged during his reelection campaign that he could end the conflict in just 24 hours, but later admitted the situation was far more complex. The Kremlin, too, has long cautioned against imposing deadlines, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying that forcing a timeline for peace is “a thankless pursuit.”
On Tuesday, Trump suggested that Putin and Zelensky should meet one-on-one before any trilateral summit involving him, noting their strained relationship. He said he would step in personally “if necessary” to help finalize a deal. Zelensky has expressed willingness to meet Putin, while the Russian president has said such a meeting could take place during the “final stage” of negotiations.
