Russia Intends to Elevate Ukraine Peace Talks
(MENAFN) Russia has expressed its willingness to enhance the level of its peace talks delegation in ongoing negotiations with Ukraine, as announced by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
This development comes in the aftermath of a recent summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Lavrov explained that the proposal to upgrade the status of the delegations originated from President Putin.
This suggestion followed a phone conversation with President Trump on Monday.
The call coincided with Trump's meetings at the White House with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and several influential European leaders.
Lavrov’s comments raise the possibility that this increase in delegation status could be a step toward potential future discussions between Putin and Zelensky. However, it remains uncertain whether this was a direct indication of such high-level talks.
He further elaborated that the revised delegation status would involve the examination of “a separate bloc [of questions] to address the political aspects of conflict resolution, alongside military and humanitarian issues.”
According to Lavrov, Russia had previously proposed creating three specialized working groups to address these matters during the latest round of face-to-face discussions with Ukraine.
Despite this initiative, he noted that Kiev “so far has not responded.”
So far this year, Russia and Ukraine have engaged in three rounds of in-person negotiations held in Istanbul.
These discussions have been spearheaded on the Russian side by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky.
While these meetings have not led to any significant progress in resolving the broader conflict, they have resulted in the exchange of prisoners between the two nations.
