White House reports Trump implementing ‘sanctions’ on India to end Ukraine war
Leavitt explained that Trump is using public pressure and economic measures, including sanctions on India and other countries, to push for a resolution to the war. This new tariff comes on top of a previously imposed 25% duty following the failure of trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi earlier this month.
India has strongly criticized the tariffs, calling them “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable,” and has pledged to safeguard its national interests.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused India of profiting from the conflict by buying Russian crude at low prices and reselling it. He noted that India’s share of oil imports from Russia has jumped from less than 1% before the invasion to around 42% now, while China’s imports rose only slightly. Bessent also estimated that some of India’s wealthiest families earned $16 billion in excess profits through this practice, which he deemed unacceptable.
