India Approves Deal for Indigenous Fighter Jets

(MENAFN) The Indian government has officially approved a $7.6 billion contract for domestically manufactured fighter aircraft, according to a report by a news agency citing defense insiders.

Under this agreement, the 97 Tejas Mark 1A light combat aircraft will be produced by the government-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), a company specializing in manufacturing fighter jets, helicopters, jet engines, and avionics systems.

This procurement aims to assist the Indian Air Force (IAF) in replacing its outdated fleet of MiG-21 jets, which are set to be gradually retired in the coming weeks, as stated in the article.

This latest fighter jet order arrives after nearly five years without any such acquisition.

More than 65% of the parts for these new aircraft are expected to be manufactured within India, according to a news website.

The decision to purchase the Tejas fighter jets is viewed as a strong endorsement of the government’s “Make in India” campaign.

Additionally, the program is anticipated to create substantial opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises within the country's defense industry.

India has been intensifying its defense spending this year.

In May, the government of New Delhi sanctioned $175 million for the development of an advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA), a multi-role stealth fighter jet intended for use by both the air force and navy.
