G7 Warns of China’s Swift Nuclear Development
(MENAFN) The Group of Seven (G7) nations issued a stark warning on Wednesday over China’s accelerating nuclear weapons development, denouncing what they called a troubling lack of openness and safeguards to prevent accidental conflict.
In a joint communiqué released by the G7 Non-Proliferation Directors Group—which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the European Union—leaders stressed their growing alarm over what they described as "an increasingly uncertain security environment."
“We are concerned with China’s significant nuclear weapons build-up, which lacks transparency and meaningful safeguards against unintended nuclear escalation,” the statement read.
The group emphasized that reversing current global arms trends would demand sustained, multilateral commitment. “We are convinced that, in an increasingly uncertain security environment, meaningful progress on disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control will require sustained engagement and mutual understanding from all concerned parties,” it said.
Acknowledging surging interest in nuclear energy worldwide, the bloc committed to working together to ensure that civilian nuclear programs meet rigorous international safety and security benchmarks.
“We reiterate our principled opposition to the proliferation of nuclear weapons as detrimental to international peace and security,” the G7 declared.
Turning to the Middle East, the statement reaffirmed a hardline stance against Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “We remain resolute in seeking peace and stability in the Middle East,” it said, underscoring that Iran “can never have or acquire a nuclear weapon.”
The G7 urged renewed diplomatic efforts with Tehran. “We call for the resumption of negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive, verifiable, and durable agreement that addresses Iran’s nuclear program,” the statement read.
