Guinness World Records unveils oldest man to climb Mount Fuji
(MENAFN) A 102-year-old Japanese man has become the oldest individual to reach the summit of Mount Fuji, as stated by Guinness World Records.
Kokichi Akuzawa successfully climbed Japan’s tallest mountain, standing at 3,776 meters (12,388 feet), on August 3, after previously recovering from heart failure, according to Guinness World Records. Mount Fuji, an active stratovolcano, is located on the island of Honshu.
Akuzawa maintains a routine of climbing mountains almost every week. This recent ascent is not his first at an advanced age; he had previously reached the peak at 96.
Reflecting on the latest climb, Kokichi said that it felt "a lot different from the last time." Unlike his previous ascent, he took three days to reach the top, spending two nights in mountain huts along the way.
When asked if he planned to climb Mount Fuji again, he humorously replied, "Never again." He added, "If you ask me next year, maybe you'll get a different answer, but for now, I'm happy with that climb."
Earlier in his later years, Akuzawa also climbed Nabewariyama mountain, which rises 1,272 meters (4,173 feet), to mark his 99th birthday.
