Europe Encounters Record Wildfire Damage
The ongoing wildfires, intensified by the severe heatwave sweeping the continent, have driven the total burned land in 2025 to exceed one million hectares.
This marks the highest extent of wildfire damage recorded in any year since EFFIS began its official documentation in 2006.
The data indicates that August represents the most significant portion of this increase, with Spain and Portugal facing numerous fire outbreaks during this period.
Specifically, EFFIS data reveals a sharp rise in the burned area in Spain starting in August, reaching nearly 400,000 hectares (about 988,400 acres).
In a similar pattern, Portugal has seen approximately 270,000 hectares (around 667,700 acres) consumed by flames this year, with the heatwave in August greatly accelerating the spread.
Additionally, the continent’s total carbon dioxide emissions have surged to 38 million tons, coinciding with the duration of these widespread wildfires.
