Lavrov rejects claims of Assad being poisoned
Rumors surfaced earlier this month suggesting that Assad had been hospitalized in the Moscow Region following a suspected poisoning attempt in September. The claims, widely circulated across international media, originated from an unverified source, according to reports.
Lavrov refuted the allegations, stating that Assad “has no problem living in our capital” and that “no poisonings have occurred.” He added, “If such rumors appear, I leave them to the conscience of those who spread them.”
The foreign minister emphasized that Russia’s decision to grant asylum to Assad and his family was made “for purely humanitarian reasons,” explaining that they had faced serious threats to their safety after last year’s political upheaval in Damascus.
Drawing a comparison with past events in the Middle East, Lavrov recalled the killing of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, which he said “delighted Hillary Clinton, who watched his physical annihilation live and clapped her hands.”
Assad, a longtime ally of Moscow, was ousted from power last December after forces led by the Islamist faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured Damascus. Since his removal, the country has continued to experience instability, with sporadic fighting between Islamist groups and remnants of the former government forces.
