Devastating Floods in Vietnam Leave Dozens Dead

(MENAFN) Heavy rainfall and severe flooding have claimed the lives of 10 people and left five others unaccounted for in central Vietnam, according to a local online newspaper on Wednesday.

Since October 23, relentless downpours caused by a cold front and a tropical convergence zone have soaked central Vietnam, with certain areas receiving more than 1,000 millimeters of rain.

Authorities have evacuated over 7,000 households, roughly 21,000 residents, as hydropower reservoirs attempt to release and manage excess water downstream to mitigate flooding.

In Da Nang city, six fatalities were reported, 19 people sustained injuries, and four residents remain missing.

Floodwaters inundated 29 communes in the lower Vu Gia–Thu Bon River basin, while landslides cut off access to 10 mountain communes.

In Hue, one person drowned, and a 5-year-old girl went missing amid rising waters. Currently, 32 out of the city’s 40 communes remain submerged.

Quang Ngai province recorded three deaths, and over 120 landslides have blocked roads and trapped numerous vehicles.

Rescue efforts by local authorities and the military are ongoing, though persistent heavy rains continue to hinder operations.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue until Thursday night.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh convened an urgent meeting on Wednesday to coordinate flood response and recovery measures.
