Romania says US to reduce its presence on some eastern flank nations

(MENAFN) The United States will scale back its troop rotations in several eastern flank countries, including Romania, after formally notifying NATO allies, Romania’s Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

Officials emphasized that the move is not a full withdrawal, with around 1,000 US soldiers set to remain stationed across Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Hungary.

“The resizing of US forces represents an effect of the new priorities of the presidential administration, announced as early as February,” the ministry statement noted, referring to the Trump administration’s second term. It added that the adjustment also reflects NATO’s strengthened presence and activities on the Eastern Flank, allowing the US to modify its military posture in the region.

Approximately 800 troops are expected to leave primarily from Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, while forces at Deveselu and Campia Turzii will remain in place. The move comes after reports earlier this year suggested that the US was considering a significant reduction of its Eastern European forces.

The Trump administration has repeatedly emphasized that NATO allies need to increase their own defense efforts, with President Donald Trump often criticizing the alliance’s longstanding commitments. NATO has not yet released an official statement on the troop adjustments.
