Mayon Volcano Records Hundreds of Rockfalls

(MENAFN) State volcanologists in the Philippines documented 256 rockfall incidents at Mayon Volcano amid ongoing lava activity, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced Sunday.

According to Phivolcs, the volcano also produced 41 pyroclastic density currents, while sulfur dioxide emissions reached 777 metric tons per day on Saturday, as reported by a news agency.

Ground deformation readings indicated that Mayon remains swollen or inflated, signaling continued volcanic unrest. The agency noted that moderate steam plumes rose up to 200 meters (656 feet) from the summit and drifted northeast.

Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, in place since Jan. 6. Authorities continue to enforce strict bans on entry into the Permanent Danger Zone due to risks of rockfalls, avalanches, and potential explosions.

Historically, Mayon has erupted more than 50 times over the past five centuries. Its 2018 eruption displaced thousands of residents.

Meanwhile, the death toll from a landfill collapse in the Philippines climbed to six on Sunday, as rescue teams pressed on with efforts to locate dozens of trapped workers.

Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, chairperson of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, confirmed that two additional bodies had been recovered, while 30 individuals remain missing, according to a media outlet.
