Vance to discuss situation in Iran in national security meeting

(MENAFN) US Vice President JD Vance is set to chair a meeting of senior officials to assess the rapidly unfolding situation in Iran, where mass demonstrations continue to sweep the country.

According to sources, Vance will convene the session with the National Security Council’s “principals” at 4:00 pm Eastern Time (2100 GMT). It is unclear whether President Donald Trump will participate directly, though he could potentially join via Air Force One as he returns to Washington from Detroit, where he delivered remarks focusing on the economy.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump encouraged Iranian protesters to continue demonstrating, asserting that “help is on its way.” In a post on his social media platform, he wrote: "Iranian Patriots, keep protesting - take over your institutions!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials until the senseless killing of protesters stops. Help is on its way. MIGA!!!" The acronym MIGA referenced a variation of his “Make America Great Again” slogan, applied to Iran.

When pressed by reporters about the nature of support for the demonstrators, Trump did not provide specifics, stating: "You're gonna have to figure that one out, I'm sorry."

Iran has seen widespread unrest in recent weeks, fueled by economic deterioration and the sharp devaluation of its national currency, the rial. Human Rights Activists News Agency, a US-based monitoring group, estimates that at least 646 people—including both protesters and security personnel—have died, with over 1,000 others injured.
