EU Parliament bars Iranian government representatives from premises

(MENAFN) The European Parliament has officially banned all Iranian diplomats and government representatives from its premises, President Roberta Metsola announced on Monday. She emphasized that the “brave people of Iran” require more than symbolic solidarity.

The decision comes amid widespread protests in Iran, which began in late December following a sharp decline in the national currency. Demonstrations have intensified, resulting in violent clashes and attacks on mosques, medical facilities, and government buildings, although Western officials continue to describe the movement as largely peaceful.

“Today I have taken the decision to ban all diplomatic staff and any other representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran from all European Parliament premises,” Metsola wrote on X. She added in a letter to MEPs that the ban is immediate and covers all parliamentary buildings in Brussels, Strasbourg, and Luxembourg. Iranian passport holders working for the government will be denied entry.

Metsola also urged additional measures, calling for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to be designated as a terrorist organization and for EU sanctions to be extended to more Iranian officials. She highlighted the need to support both protesters in the streets and political prisoners still detained.

US President Donald Trump has similarly voiced support for Iranian protesters, warning that the United States is “locked and loaded” to intervene if Iranian authorities open fire on demonstrators.
