France announces opening of Greenland consulate in February
Speaking to a radio channel, Barrot explained that the move is intended to “mark our willingness to deepen our presence in all dimensions” in the autonomous Danish territory, which has recently drawn heightened attention from Washington.
While the French Foreign Ministry had previously said it would send an envoy next month to evaluate potential sites, Barrot confirmed that a permanent diplomatic presence will be quickly established in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk.
The decision comes amid rising tensions between Europe and the United States regarding Greenland’s status. US President Donald Trump stated Sunday that the US must “acquire” Greenland to prevent Russia or China from taking control, describing ownership of the island as an “absolute necessity” for American economic security and likening it to a “large real estate deal.”
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has attracted US interest due to its strategic location and vast mineral resources. Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rejected any proposals to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty.
Barrot called on Washington to end what he described as political “blackmail,” emphasizing that “Greenland is a European territory under NATO protection” and that no circumstances justify US intervention.
The upcoming consulate is expected to serve a wider strategic role beyond standard consular services for the six French nationals currently registered in Greenland, including supporting scientific research and assisting French companies seeking to invest in the resource-rich region.
