Trump calls for protesters to seize control of state institutions

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has publicly encouraged demonstrators in Iran to take control of government institutions, coupling the call with vague assurances of American support and warnings of harsh consequences for Iranian officials.

Iranian authorities have accused Washington and Israel of playing a “big hand” in the unrest, portraying the protests as a foreign-driven “terrorist war.”

“All Iranian patriots, keep protesting,” Trump said during a speech to the Detroit Economic Club on Tuesday and echoed in a post on Truth Social. “Take over your institutions if possible. And save the names of the killers and the abusers that are abusing you,” he added, saying those responsible would “pay a very big price.”

The demonstrations, which erupted in late December following the sharp collapse of the national currency, have reportedly led to significant loss of life. While Western outlets and activist groups claim the death toll runs into the thousands, Trump said the exact figures remain unclear and emphasized that his response would depend on confirmed information.

“We’re going to get some accurate numbers... The killing looks like it’s significant, but we don’t know yet for certain,” he told reporters.

When asked to explain what he meant by saying “help is on its way,” Trump offered a broad explanation in an interview with a news agency. “Well there’s a lot of help on the way and in different forms, including economic help from our standpoint and not going to help Iran very much,” he said, referring to newly imposed tariffs on any country conducting business with Iran.

Trump also declined to rule out military options, pointing to previous US actions in Venezuela and the killings of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Iranian General Qasem Soleimani as examples of his approach.

“The end game is to win. I like winning,” he said.
