China Protests Trump 25 Percent Iran Tariffs
"Tariff wars have no winners and China will firmly protect its legitimate and lawful rights and interests," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing.
Emphasizing Middle Eastern stability, Mao stated Beijing backs Iran to "maintain national stability" and "oppose(s) interfering in the country's internal affairs and the use, or threat of use, of force in international affairs."
"Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America," Trump declared Monday via Truth Social, his social media platform. "This Order is final and conclusive."
The escalating tensions pit the planet's two largest economies against each other, with US-China bilateral trade measured in hundreds of billions of dollars annually.
Trump has repeatedly threatened military strikes against Iran should authorities deploy lethal force against demonstrators, though his tariff announcement followed mere hours after the White House indicated he "has an interest" in pursuing diplomatic channels with Tehran.
