Nvidia CEO says US-China decoupling idea is flawed
Speaking in a recent interview, Huang remarked: “The idea that floated around about US decoupling from China, I think, is flawed, and our dependency on each other is quite significant and it’s deeper than people think.”
He emphasized that the artificial intelligence industry in particular relies heavily on talent from China, noting that “the brilliant students and the brilliant scientists of China” play a central role in global innovation. Huang added that roughly half of the world’s AI researchers are either from China or of Chinese heritage.
His comments come amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Beijing. The U.S. has accused China of unfair trade practices, including intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers, while China has criticized American export restrictions as politically motivated measures that disrupt supply chains.
In September, the U.S. Department of Commerce added 32 foreign entities to its trade blacklist, including 23 Chinese firms. Some were accused of using American technology to support chip production for SMIC, China’s leading semiconductor manufacturer. Beijing denounced the sanctions as an abuse of export controls and responded with its own investigations into U.S. chip policies, citing anti-dumping and discrimination concerns.
This exchange underscores the fragile balance between competition and cooperation in the global tech sector, where both nations remain deeply reliant on each other despite political disputes.
