xAI Grok Secures Pentagon Approval to Access Classified Systems

(MENAFN) The agreement extends Grok’s reach into some of the Pentagon’s most sensitive domains, including intelligence analysis, weapons development, and battlefield operations, according to media.

Until now, Anthropic’s Claude had been the sole AI authorized in those environments. But tensions have escalated between the Pentagon and Anthropic over safeguards embedded in Claude.

Anthropic rejected a Defense Department request to make Claude available for “all lawful purposes,” resisting its use in mass surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons. By contrast, xAI accepted the “all lawful use” standard sought by the Pentagon, media reported.

Uncertainty remains over whether Grok can fully replace Claude or how long such a transition would take. Claude is already embedded in defense operations through partnerships, including work with Palantir.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is scheduled to meet Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the Pentagon on Tuesday. Sources told media the encounter could be tense, with one defense official saying Hegseth plans to deliver an ultimatum. The department is weighing whether to classify Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” if it refuses to lift restrictions.

Officials acknowledge that removing Claude from classified systems would be technically complex.

Grok, alongside Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is already deployed in unclassified military systems. Both Google and OpenAI have been in talks with the Pentagon about expanding into classified environments.

The Pentagon has recently accelerated outreach to OpenAI, though one source said negotiations remain stalled over complex issues. Another source confirmed discussions had intensified.

The New York Times previously reported Google was nearing a deal to enable classified use of Gemini, while OpenAI was not close to agreement. A defense official told the outlet that talks with both companies continue, with expectations that agreements will be signed if they accept the “all lawful purposes” requirement.
