UN Warns of Ongoing Deadly Airstrikes Endangering Children in Myanmar

(MENAFN) Children in Myanmar remain at serious risk from military air attacks a year after a bombing at a school in the Sagaing Region left more than 20 students dead, a United Nations investigative body said Tuesday.

The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar announced that it is continuing to examine the May 2025 strike on a school in Oe Htein Kwin village, in addition to several newer attacks carried out in areas where children were reportedly present.

According to a statement issued by the mechanism, an airstrike earlier this month on a playground in Chin State killed at least five children ranging in age from five months to 10 years old.

As stated by reports, investigators are also reviewing other attacks that hit villages in Mandalay, Bago Region and Rakhine State, as well as a church in Tanintharyi Region, two schools in Rakhine State, and a monastery in Sagaing Region that had been sheltering displaced civilians.

“The Mechanism is focusing on air strikes that appear to directly target civilians in locations where children are likely to be present, which may be war crimes or crimes against humanity,” said Nicholas Koumjian, head of the mechanism.

According to data referenced by the investigative body, at least 640 airstrikes between the February 2021 military takeover and 2025 resulted in children being killed or wounded.
