Estonia Plans to Build Around 150 Bunkers Along Russian Border

(MENAFN) Estonia will build about 150 bunkers in Ida-Virumaa, its northeastern region bordering Russia, as it hardens its defenses, Defense Minister Martin Herem said Wednesday.

According to a national public broadcaster, roughly 100 of the bunkers will go up on state-owned land, with about 50 more on private or municipal property. Herem gave no further details on the planned structures or how they would be used.

The announcement comes as the Baltic states have spent recent years stepping up defense measures and civilian preparedness amid heightened security concerns. NATO officials have warned of Russian drone incursions, airspace violations, sabotage and other hybrid threats across the region, and European countries have also been bolstering their air defenses.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NATO has reinforced its eastern flank with additional troops and a rapid-response plan.

Earlier this month, the Estonian military said it would permanently relocate a combat-ready brigade closer to the Russian border. The 1st Brigade will move to a newly expanded base less than 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the frontier, a shift meant to sharpen Estonia’s ability to respond to a potential Russian attack.
